William Hurt and Raul Julia star in Hector Babenco’s Oscar winning adaptation of Manuel Puig’s novel

“An intense story, set largely in one prison cell in an unnamed Latin
American country, Luis Molina and Valentin Arregui are cell mates and
poles apart. Luis is a camp gay man who escapes his grim conditions in a
cinematic fantasy. Valentin is a revolutionary firebrand, tortured by the
authorities but steadfast to his cause.
Through their hardship and the escapism of Luis’s storytelling, they
come to understand and respect each other. A bond develops and the
consequences for both of them are as romantic and tragic as Luis’s tale.”
The Bent Bars Project is a letter-writing project for lesbian, gay,
bisexual, trans, intersex, and queer prisoners in Britain. The project
aims to develop stronger connections and build solidarity between LGBTQ
communities outside and inside prison walls. Bent Bars aims to work in
solidarity with prisoners by sharing resources, providing mutual support
and drawing public attention to the struggles of queer and trans people
behind bars.
